Sustainable Groundwater Management in California
Despite being the wealthiest state, nearly one million Californians lack access to safe and affordable drinking water. In particular, the Central Valley’s intensive agriculture, producing over $20 billion annually, depletes groundwater leading to rapidly declining well levels, and contaminates drinking water with pesticides, and nitrates, causing serious health risks. UCS and its partners, continue to press for better oversight of groundwater management plans that have unacceptable impacts on communities.
